MIS Sunset Party

São Paulo’s Museum of Image and Sound (MIS) is taking over the place formerly occupied by clubs and festivals. With its monthly Sunset Party they’re proving that their radar for music experimentation is so far the best in town. Latest performances of Silver City (Buenos Aires), Ashley Beedle (London), Joakim (Paris), Floating Points (London), Nosaj Thing (Los Angeles) and local DJs Akin, Tahira, RamiroZ and MZK justify their fame. And It’s not just music. Interventions from collective Grite Poesia (means “Shout Poetry”) and video art exhibitions help turning these afternoons at the museum into synesthetic experiences.

Taking place at the open area of MIS, the Sunset Party usually starts at 16h and goes until 22h. Drinks are offered by one of the sponsors, but people are encouraged to bring their own bottles. Some even come with their kids and their dogs. With free entrance, the event runs against the paradigm of overpriced access to culture at the most expensive city of South America.

Curiously, MIS is located in one of the most rich and green areas of São Paulo, surrounded by mansions and some of centennial tree species from Mata Atlântica . So don’t be surprised to see birds and butterflies while you’re dancing, they’re really there. When the night comes down, colorful lights seem to enhance the trees dimensions and, for a few minutes, you forget you’re in the city.

Sometimes the crowd gets big and reaches the garden of MuBE, the Museum of Brazilian Sculpture, where you can see works from Sonia Ebling, Yutaka Toyota, Ivald Granato, Roberto Lerner, among others. Luckily this is not the type of neighbor who complains about the music.

While we wait the announcement of next MIS Sunset Party, take the time to listen and dance with last month presentation of Joakim, recorded by peeps from DeepBeep:

MIS Sunset Party usually happens on the second sunday of the month. Stay tuned to the official website for news and remember to check the exhibitions on weekdays too.

If you like the project, don’t hesitate to suggest new attractions on your comments. We make sure our friends from MIS will get your notes.
